Among the religious groups the company caters to are the Latter Day Saints, the Seventh Day Adventists and Catholics, and it also provides the well-known Jewish dating sites, such as www.jdate.com and www.jewishmingle.com.

But that's the tip of the iceberg. Spark owns sites with an ethnic emphasis too, like www.italiansinglesconnection.com and www.blacksingles.com, as well as other social sites for deaf singles, larger women, military singles, and so on.

This is a company with definite aspirations for helping people connect with each other, but in recent months, things haven't gone so well. Profits have been down by as much as 25%, and the Jewish dating services seem to be experiencing more of a slow down. It's hard to say why this has happened.

Yet as times have been tough everywhere, it's understandable why perhaps people are foregoing the luxury of having someone find dates for them. And the downturn can't necessarily be attributed to American singles alone, even though the United States has been very hard hit. Spark Networks' Jewish sites are also set in the UK, France, and Israel as well. So things are down everywhere.

With the Jewish single dating sites being so important to the bottom line of Spark Network, it stands to reason that the company would concentrate on them when trying to recover. Spark has already rolled out a redesign for www.jdate.com, in time for the summer of 2009, adding many more features and doing away with its "clunky" feel.

The company clearly hopes that it can bring the Jewish sites back to profitability, since even when they turn a profit, websites like American Singles (www.americansingles.com) and Christian Mingle (www.christianmingle.com) apparently can't carry enough of the load to make up for the other substantial losses.
